Increased pulse pressure (PP) is an independent marker of cardiovascular risk, mainly for myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and cardiovascular deaths. Moreover, reduced circadian blood pressure (BP) variation is a potential risk factor for the development of diabetic complications, as patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) show a progressive loss of nocturnal BP decline. Accordingly, we aimed to compare the circadian pattern of ambulatory BP variability between hypertensive patients with and without DM. We analyzed 2,756 BP profiles sampled from 1,418 patients (234 complicated with DM) with grade 1–2 hypertension (641 mean), 52.6±13.8 years of age. BP was measured by ambulatory monitoring (ABPM) at 20-min intervals from 07:00 to 23:00 hours and at 30-min intervals at night for 48 consecutive hours. Physical activity was simultaneously monitored every minute by wrist actigraphy, and the information used to determine diurnal and nocturnal means of BP for each patient according to individual resting time. Circadian parameters established by population multiple-component analysis were compared between patients with and without DM by nonparametric testing. Patients with DM, either untreated or evaluated under antihypertensive medication, are characterized by a significant increase in systolic BP, mainly during nocturnal resting hours, as compared to hypertensive patients without DM. The nocturnal mean of diastolic BP was, however, similar between groups, while the diurnal mean was significantly reduced in DM. Accordingly, there was a highly significant increase in PP across the 24 hours in both untreated (5.6 mm Hg in 24-hour mean, P<0.001) and treated patients with DM (6.4 mm Hg, P<0.001), as compared to patients without DM. Results from this study on hypertensive patients evaluated by 48-hour continuous ABPM and with nocturnal BP mean calculated individually according to actual resting time determined by actigraphy, indicates a highly significant increase of PP in patients with DM. Results also corroborate the significant reduction in day/night variation of systolic and diastolic BP in DM, reflecting a higher tendency towards a nondipper profile among patients with DM. The elevation in PP and the lack of a proper nocturnal decline in BP should be taking into account for the treatment of hypertensive patients with DM. Genetic parameters widely used to monitor genetic variation in conservation programmes, such as effective number of founders, founder genome equivalents and effective population size, are interrelated in terms of coancestries and variances of contributions from ancestors to descendants. A new parameter, the effective number of non-founders, is introduced to describe the relation between effective number of founders and founder genome equivalents. Practical recommendations for the maintenance of genetic variation in small captive populations are discussed. To maintain genetic diversity, minimum coancestry among individuals should be sought. This minimizes the variances of contributions from ancestors to descendants in all previous generations. The method of choice of parents and the system of mating should be independent of each other because a clear-cut recommendation cannot be given on the latter.
Astragalus edulis (Fabaceae) is an endangered annual plant species from the western Mediterranean region. It occurs in the Iberian Peninsula (SE), Morocco (two main locations in the NE and SW), and the easternmost Canary Islands (Lanzarote and Fuerteventura). After a thorough study assessing genetic diversity and phylogeographic patterns, and a proposal of a management plan to preserve the genetic diversity across the entire area of the species, it is about time to go further in the species conservation. It is necessary to recognize genetically impoverished populations to be able to successfully reinforce populations and find realistic places for translocations. For this, Nei’s genetic diversity values were calculated for the three geographic areas and for their populations. Diversity values were further evaluated to calculate the optimal contribution for the populations within each area to maximize the genetic pool. To evaluate whether the optimum habitat for the species is expected to grow or decrease under a climate change scenario, the optimal model of current climatic suitability of A. edulis was projected into the IPCC (2070_RCP8.5) future scenario. The different geographical areas showed similar genetic diversity values. The populations that contribute to maximize the genetic pool in each geographic area were similar, but not equal, to those proposed in previous studies. The future potential habitat for the species shows a significant range decline, which will affect translocation efforts.
Abstract Deliberate adulteration of food products is as old as food processing and production systems. Food adulteration is occurring increasingly often today. With globalization and complex distribution systems, adulteration may have a far‐reaching impact and even adverse consequences on well‐being. The means of the international community to confront and solve food fraud today are scattered and largely ineffective. A collective approach is needed to identify all stakeholders in the food supply chain, certify and qualify them, exclude those failing to meet applicable standards, and track food in a real time. This review provides some background into the drivers of fraudulent practices (economically motivated adulteration, food‐industry perspectives, and consumers’ perceptions of fraud) and discusses a wide range of the currently available technologies for detecting food adulteration followed by multivariate pattern recognition tools. Food chain integrity policies are discussed. Future directions in research, concerned not only with food adulterers but also with food safety and climate change, may be useful for researchers in developing interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary problems.
These findings suggest that artocarpanone may be used to enhance the antibacterial activity of norfloxacin against MRSA.
