Berries are a rich source of bioactive compounds with potential beneficial effects on human health. In the last 5 years, several in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies, summarized in this concise review, have confirmed their preventive effect on the onset of serious diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases, reaffirming the importance of their implementation in the diet.
We describe a hands-on experience designed for students in an upper-division undergraduate analytical laboratory for the UV–vis spectrophotometric determination of phosphorus in natural waters using a current microextraction technique. The method is based on the formation of a colored ion pair and its subsequent extraction in a microdrop of organic solvent. The proposed laboratory experiment allows the students to gain experience in developing a green sample preparation approach. Furthermore, the extraction of a colored product allows them to better understand different issues that govern solvent microextraction. Optimization of some experimental parameters and the chemical analysis of natural waters are also addressed in this laboratory experiment.

This study extends previous results on the effects of low-dose aspirin (ASA) on blood pressure (BP) in pregnant women who were at a higher risk of developing preeclampsia than the general obstetric population and who received ASA at different times of the day according to their rest-activity cycle. A double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was conducted in 341 pregnant women (181 primipara) randomly assigned to 1 of 6 possible groups according to treatment (either placebo or ASA, 100 mg/day, starting at 12-16 weeks of gestation) and the time of treatment: on awakening (Time-1), 8 hours after awakening (Time-2), or before bedtime (Time-3). BP for each woman was automatically monitored for 48 consecutive hours every 4 weeks from the day of recruitment until delivery, as well as at puerperium. The women under investigation provided a total of 2511 BP profiles. Effects of medication and time of ingestion upon BP were evaluated by ANOVA. There was no effect of ASA on BP at Time-1 (compared with placebo). A BP reduction was, however, highly statistically significant when ASA was given at Time-2 and, to a greater extent, at Time-3 (mean reductions of 12.6/8.5 mm Hg in 24-hour mean for systolic/diastolic BP at the time of delivery as compared to placebo given at bedtime). Differences in BP among women receiving ASA at different circadian times disappeared at puerperium (P>0.096). There was no effect of ASA or placebo on heart rate at any time of administration. Results indicate a highly significant effect of ASA on BP that is markedly dependent on the time of ASA administration with respect to the rest-activity cycle. Timed use of ASA at low dose effectively contributes to BP control in women at high risk for preeclampsia and could thus eventually reduce the incidence of hypertensive complications in pregnancy, as previously documented [Hermida et al. Recent mutation accumulation results from invertebrate species suggest that mild deleterious mutation is far less frequent than previously thought, implying smaller expressed mutational loads. Although the rate (λ) and effect ( s ) of very slight deleterious mutation remain unknown, most mutational fitness decline would come from moderately deleterious mutation ( s ≈ 0·2, λ ≈ 0·03), and this situation would not qualitatively change in harsh environments. Estimates of the average coefficient of dominance ( h ¯) of non-severe deleterious mutations are controversial. The typical value of h ¯ = 0·4 can be questioned, and a lower estimate (about 0·1) is suggested. Estimated mutational parameters are remarkably alike for morphological and fitness component traits (excluding lethals), indicating low mutation rates and moderate mutational effects, with a distribution generally showing strong negative asymmetry and little leptokurtosis. New mutations showed considerable genotype–environment interaction. However, the mutational variance of fitness-component traits due to non-severe detrimental mutations did not increase with environmental harshness. For morphological traits, a class of predominantly additive mutations with no detectable effect on fitness and relatively small effect on the trait was identified. This should be close to that responsible for standing variation in natural populations.
