Our prospective study provides strong evidence that regular physical activity before pregnancy is associated with lower GDM risk.
There are multiple lines of evidence that major faults which host large earthquakes (e.g., San Andreas fault) operate at much lower shear stresses than what is predicted by Byerlee’s law and a litho- and hydro-static stress state. Recent laboratory experimental...
The shape of the association between BMI and mortality was determined by the relation between two body components (lean body mass and fat mass) and mortality. This finding suggests that the "obesity paradox" controversy may be largely explained by low lean body mass, rather than low fat mass, in the lower range of BMI.
To date, numerous studies have been carried out to explore nanowires as new building blocks in electronics, photonics, solar-cells, batteries, nanogenerators, and biological/chemical sensors. Commonly cited properties of nanowires in these studies that can be advantageous are the small diameters, large surface area and smooth surfaces of the nanowire materials. For example, the large surface area and small diameters enabled nanowire electrodes to outperform thin-lm electrodes in battery applications in terms of rate of charging/discharging and stability (e.g., small diameters can better sustain strain without cracking), while the nearlyperfect material quality has enabled optical and electrical pumped nanowire lasers. Controlled nanowire growth has also enabled biosensors with integrated detectors and electrodes, all achieved in a single nanowire during growth. Another aspect that sets the “bottom-up” nanowire system apart is the ability to obtain high quality nanowire heterostructures during

Derived minimal effect levels (DMELs) are calculated as part of the human health hazard assessment portion of the European Community Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) chemical safety assessment. DMELs are derived for substances that exhibit a nonthreshold mode of action such as mutagens and carcinogens. A DMEL is a reference risk level that is considered to be of very low concern—i.e., it should be seen as a ‘tolerable’ level of effects but not a level where no potential effects can be foreseen. The European Chemicals Agency has developed two methodologies for DMEL derivation. DMELs are used in the REACH semiquantitative health risk characterization process.
A crack paralleling a bonded plane interface between two dissimilar isotropic elastic solids is considered. When the distance of the crack from the interface is small compared to the crack length itself and to other length scales characterizing the geometry, a simple universal relation exists between the Mode I and Mode II stress intensity factors and the complex stress intensity factor associated with the corresponding problem for the crack lying on the interface. In other words, if the influence of external loading and geometry on the interface crack is known, then this information can immediately be used to generate the stress intensity factors for the sub-interface crack. Conditions for cracks to propagate near and parallel to, but not along, an interface are derived.
(III).
