As leader (Chair) of the EU Marie Curie Chair in Évora University, ICAAM (www.eu_chair.uevora.pt/) is dedicated in initiate new directions in thinking in the area of applied botany by combining interdisciplinarity and systemic thinking and through linking fundamental leading edge research directly to application in molecular plant breeding for sustainable agriculture and for alternative energy supply. Specific research on the alternative oxidase (AOX) across plant species and systems was initiated by the Marie Curie Chair projects. The ´First International AOX Symposium´ was organized as an ´international control´ of our research approach after three years in October 2008 (www.aox2008.uevora.pt). We contributed with 13 presentations. Currently, we are developing new technology and are building-up a unique infrastructure for AOX research and also for cell-based functional marker development. Our group is the only one in the field of AOX research that studies AOX polymorphism and AOX marker development. The new focus on single cell research in our field combined with global genome organisation is another speciality, which is novel in this context at world scale. Currently, a book chapter is developed under the title 'From AOX gene diversity to functional marker development' that will involve in agreement with the editors 12 independent contributions all from the wider local and virtual Chair team.
