Intercomparisons of refracted near field measurements have shown variations as large as 20% in refractive index difference between instruments and with measurements made by axial interferometry. In one type of instrument errors were due to the use of a gaussian light intensity distribution rather than the lambertian distribution required for linear operation and accurate calibration. We have found it possible to reliably correct for this source of error using software developed to run on the instrument's computer.
