Cyclocondensation of tetrahydro‐4H‐pyran‐4‐one (I) with ethyl cyanoacetate (II) and ammonia (III) yields the spirocyclic dicyanocycloimide (IVa) which is cleaved on treatment with acid, forming the diester (Va).
