Abstract
1 min readThe Award for Meritorious Contributions to Neuropathology recognizes members who have made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in neuropathology and have provided service to the American Association of Neuropathologists. Each recipient of the award is nominated by the President, in conjunction with the Nominating Committee and with the approval of the Executive Council.
The qualities of outstanding scientific achievement and service are embodied in this year's recipients, Drs Peter Burger, Pierluigi Gambetti, and Nicholas Gonatas. They join the rich roster of distinguished former award recipients.

Dr Peter Burger is a professor of pathology, oncology, and neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He is internationally known for his contributions to the field of adult and pediatric brain tumors. He attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. After a rotating internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital, he moved to Durham to begin his residency in anatomic pathology and neuropathology under the tutelage of Dr F. Stephen Vogel. His talent in surgical neuropathology, particularly in the diagnosis of brain tumors, was evident from the beginning. His first book, Surgical Pathology of the Nervous System and Its Coverings , was published in 1976, just 3 years after he finished his residency and the same year that he passed his boards.

In 1993, after 20 years on the faculty, Dr Burger left Duke and moved to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, where he stands out as a clinician, scholar, and teacher. His opinions on difficult cases are highly respected and he receives requests for consultations from all over the world. He has written more than 400 papers, …
