(a)]. R = Alkyl, Aryl, MeCO, MeO; X = Br, I.
Templating approaches are being developed for the synthesis of inorganic nanotubes, a novel platform for nanofluidics. Single crystalline semiconductor GaN nanotubes have been synthesized using an epitaxial casting method. The partial thermal oxidation of silicon nanowires leads to the synthesis of silica nanotubes. The dimension of these nanotubes can be precisely controlled during the templating process. These inorganic nanotubes can be integrated into metal-oxide solution field effect transistors (MOSolFETs), which exhibit rapid field effect modulation of ionic conductance. These nanofluidic devices have been further demonstrated to be useful for single-molecule sensing, as single DNA molecules can be readily detected either by charge effect or by geometry effect. These inorganic nanotubes will have great implications in subfemtoliter analytical technology and large-scale nanofluidic integration.
This paper examines the role of shear keys at bridge abutments in the seismic behavior of "ordinary" bridges. The seismic responses of bridges subjected to spatially uniform and spatially varying ground motions for three shear-key conditions—nonlinear shear keys that break off and cease to provide transverse restraint if deformed beyond a certain limit; elastic shear keys that do not break off and continue to provide transverse restraint throughout the ground shaking; and no shear keys—are examined. Results show that seismic demands for a bridge with nonlinear shear keys can generally be bounded by the demands of a bridge with elastic shear keys and a bridge with no shear keys for both types of ground motions. While ignoring shear keys provides conservative estimates of seismic demands in bridges subjected to spatially uniform ground motion, such a practice may lead to underestimation of some seismic demands in bridges in fault-rupture zones that are subjected to spatially varying ground motion. Therefore, estimating the upper bounds of seismic demands in bridges crossing fault-rupture zones requires analysis for two shear-key conditions: no shear keys and elastic shear keys.
Thin films (<10 nm) of platinum or palladium were deposited on TiO2 or GaN to form Schottky diodes. We detected and monitored the continuous electron flow across the metal-oxide interfaces of Pt/TiO2, Pd/TiO2, and Pt/GaN during the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide. The electron excitation and flow in the metals were due to conversion of energy released by the oxidation of carbon monoxide into the kinetic energy of free electrons in platinum and palladium. The best conversion of three electrons per four CO2 molecules was observed from 5 nm Pt/TiO2.
The possible ground states of a ternary fcc lattice model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor pair interactions are investigated by constructing an eight-dimensional configuration polytope and enumerating its vertices. Although a structure could not be constructed for most of the vertices, 31 ternary ground states are found, some of which correspond to structures that have been observed experimentally.
Abstract A continuous rod of porous poly(glycidy1 methacrylate‐ co ‐ethylene dimethacrylate) has been prepared by a free radical polymerization within the confines of a 16‐mm‐i.d. glass column. The epoxide groups of the rod have been modified in situ by their reaction with diethylamine to afford the ionizable weak base 1‐ N , N ‐diethylamino‐2‐hydroxypropyl functionalities that are required for the ion‐exchange chromatographic mode. The bimodal pore size distribution curve typical for other molded separation media also prevail for the preparative‐size rod. The column has been used successfully for the chromatographic separation of a mixture of standard proteins and yeast enzymes. The column exhibits a dynamic capacity that exceeds 420 mg of bovine serum albumin at a flow velocity of 60 cm/h. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

We report the meta halogenation of 1,3-disubstituted arenes to form 3,5-disubstituted aryl bromides and chlorides by using iridium-catalyzed arene borylation chemistry. Iridium-catalyzed borylation of arenes with B2pin2, followed by reaction of the boronic ester with copper(II) bromide or chloride converts arylboronic esters to the corresponding aryl halides. A variety of arenes containing alkoxy, alkyl, halogen, nitrile, ester, amide, and pivaloyl and TIPS-protected alcohols were converted to the corresponding 3,5-disubstituted aryl bromides and chlorides in yields ranging from 46% to 85%. In addition, 2,6-disubstituted and 3-substituted pyridines were converted to the 4-halo and 5-halopyridines, respectively. The utility of this methodology was demonstrated by the formal conversion of nicotine to Altinicline in three steps with an overall yield of 61% using meta bromination of nicotine as the first step.

Before meaningful gains in improving the value of health care in the US can be achieved, the fragmented nature in which health care is financed and delivered must be addressed. One type of healthcare organization, the Integrated Delivery System (IDS), is poised to play a pivotal role in reform efforts. What are these systems? What is the current evidence regarding their performance? What are the current barriers to their establishment and how can these barriers be removed? This chapter addresses these important questions. Although there are many types of IDS' in the US healthcare landscape, the chapter begins by identifying the necessary healthcare components that encompass an IDS and discusses the levels of integration that are important to improving health care quality and value. Next, it explores the recent evidence regarding IDS performance which, while generally positive, is less than what it could be if there were greater focus on clinical integration. To highlight, the chapter discusses the efficacy of system engineering initiatives in two examples of large, fully integrated systems: Kaiser-Permanente and the Veterans Health Administration. The evidence here is strong that the impact of system engineering methods is enhanced through the integration of processes, goals and outcomes. Reforms necessary to encourage the development of IDS' include: 1) the development of payment mechanisms designed to increase greater inter-dependency of hospitals and physicians; 2) the modification or removal of several regulatory barriers to greater clinical integration; and 3) the establishment of a more robust data collection and reporting system to increase transparency and accountability. The chapter concludes with a framework for considering these reforms across strategic, structural, cultural, and technical dimensions.
