This paper is based on the ethnographic description of a devastated corridor of Chicago’s collapsing black ghetto at the end of the century and examines the links between the urban environment, the social structure, and collective psychology. It stresses the need for a theoretical and empirical foundation for studying the connections between urban desolation and symbolic denigration of poor neighborhoods in the polarized metropolises of advanced societies. It also discusses how the everyday experience of material shortages, ethnoracial seclusion, and socioeconomic marginality corrodes the self, stresses interpersonal ties, and skews public policy driven by the negative perceptions of these infamous places.

Dicarbonyltitanocene is an efficient and highly selective catalyst for alkyne hydroborations by catecholborane and dimethyltitanocene is an efficient and highly selective catalyst for alkene hydroborations. These results contrast the hydroboration chemistry with other early transition metal complexes that simply lead to decomposition of catecholborane to form diborane and parallel the hydroboration chemistry of permethylcyclopentadienyl lanthanide complexes. Titanocene dicarbonyl leads to exclusive anti-Markovnikov regiochemistry and to exclusive single additions of catecholborane across alkynes. Dimethyltitanocene leads to predominantly anti-Markovnikov regiochemistry with alkyl-substituted olefins, and exclusive anti-Markovnikov regiochemistry with vinylarenes. Two titanium(III) complexes, Cp2Ti(H2Bcat) and Cp2Ti(Bcat2), were isolated from the reaction mixtures. These Ti(III) complexes, as well as [Cp2TiH]2 and [Cp2TiMe]2, catalyze the addition of catecholborane to olefins more slowly than the titanium(II) and titanium(IV) compounds. These results are rationalized by a σ bond metathsis between catecholborane and titanocene alkene and alkyne complexes that possess metallacyclopropane and metallacyclopropene character as the B−C bond-forming step. This B−C bond-forming step of the catalysis was observed directly in model reactions.
Sketching and natural languages are effective communication media for interactive applications. We introduce Sketchforme, the first neural-network-based system that can generate sketches based on text descriptions specified by users. Sketchforme is capable of gaining high-level and low-level understanding of multi-object sketched scenes without being trained on sketched scene datasets annotated with text descriptions. The sketches composed by Sketchforme are expressive and realistic: we show in our user study that these sketches convey descriptions better than human-generated sketches in multiple cases, and 36.5% of those sketches are considered to be human-generated. We develop multiple interactive applications using these generated sketches, and show that Sketchforme can significantly improve language learning applications and support intelligent language-based sketching assistants.
