Understanding the wheel-terrain interaction is of great importance to improve the maneuverability and traversability of the rovers. A well-developed sensing device carried by the rover would greatly facilitate the complex risk-reducing operations on sandy terrains. In this paper, an instrumented wheel-on-limb (WOL) system of planetary rovers for wheel-terrain interaction characterization is presented. Assuming the function of a passive suspension of the wheel, the WOL system allows itself to follow the terrain contour, and keep the wheel remain lowered onto the ground during rover motion including climbing and descending, as well as deploy and place the wheel on the ground before a drive commanding. The system concept, functional requirements, and pre-design work, as well as the system integration are presented.
Driven by the shortage of qualified nurses and the increasing average age of the population, the ambient assisted living style using intelligent service robots and smart home systems has become an excellent choice to free up caregiver time and energy and provide users with a sense of independence. However, users' unique environments and differences in abilities to express themselves through different interaction modalities make intention recognition and interaction between user and service system very difficult, limiting the use of these new nursing technologies. This paper presents a multimodal domestic service robot interaction system and proposes a multimodal fusion algorithm for intention recognition to deal with these problems. The impacts of short-term and long-term changes were taken into account. Implemented interaction modalities include touch, voice, myoelectricity gesture, visual gesture, and haptics. Users could freely choose one or more modalities through which to express themselves. Virtual games and virtual activities of independent living were designed for pre-training and evaluating users' abilities to use different interaction modalities in their unique environments. A domestic service robot interaction system was built, on which a set of experiments were carried out to test the system's stability and intention recognition ability in different scenarios. The experiment results show that the system is stable and effective and can adapt to different scenarios. In addition, the intention recognition rate in the experiments was 93.62%. Older adults could master the system quickly and use it to provide some assistance for their independent living.
To solve the problem of controlling an intrinsically compliant actuator, pneumatic muscle actuator (PMA), this paper presents an extended proxy-based sliding mode control (EPSMC) strategy. It is well known that the chattering phenomenon of conventional sliding mode control (SMC) can be effectively solved by introducing a proxy between the physical object and desired position, which results in the so-called proxy-based sliding mode control (PSMC). To facilitate the theoretical analysis of PSMC and obtain a more general form of controller, a new virtual coupling and a SMC are used in our proposed EPSMC. For a class of second-order nonlinear system, the sufficient conditions ensuring the stability and passivity are obtained by using the Lyapunov functional method. Experiments on a real-time PMA control platform validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and comparison studies also show the superiority of EPSMC over the conventional SMC, PSMC, and PID controllers.
This paper addresses the time delay compensation problem for nonlinear teleoperation system. A novel motion prediction approach is proposed based on a state observer with a cascade structure. The actual positions of master robot are estimated on the slave side by using delayed information of measurements. The prediction errors remain bounded under an appropriate set of assumptions for the system uncertainties. Moreover, an essential theorem for slave controller design is proposed to demonstrate performance recovery of the closed-loop system with cascade observer. By using the predictions, the forward time delay is effectively compensated when we design the controller of slave robot. Simulations are performed to verify the effectiveness of proposed method. The prediction results are highlighted through comparing with other two kinds of cascade predictors.
