Resultados: Se incluyó a 170 pacientes.

Background:In assisted reproduction procedures, we need to develop and enhance new protocols to optimize sperm selection. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of the Z potential technique to select sperm with intact DNA in non-normospermic patients and evaluate the impact of this selection on embryonic development. Methods: We analyzed a total of 174 human seminal samples with at least one altered parameter. We measured basal, post density gradients, and post density gradients + Z potential DNA fragmentation index. To evaluate the impact of this technique on embryo development, 54 cases were selected. The embryo development parameters evaluated were fertilization rate, cleavage rate, top quality embryos at the third day and blastocysts rate. Results: We found significant differences in the study groups when we compared the sperm fragmentation index by adding the Z potential technique to density gradient selection vs. density gradients alone.Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the embryo development parameters between the low sperm fragmentation index group vs. the moderate and high sperm fragmentation index groups, when selecting sperms with this new technique. Conclusions: The Z potential technique is a very useful tool for sperm selection; it significantly reduces the DNA fragmentation index and improves the parameters of embryo development. This technique could be considered routine for its simplicity and low cost.
During the course of a survey into the distribution and growth of the fan mussels Pinna nobilis and Pinna rudis from the coastal waters of the Spanish Mediterranean the presence within the mussels of Pontonia pinnophylax has been recorded. Pontonia pinnophylax typically occurred in adult pairs, but occasionally solitary male individuals were found. The width of the cephalothorax is greater in females than males, whereas the chelae of the second periopods, which are unequal, are larger in males. There is a general relationship between the size of P. pinnophylax and its pinnid host; the largest individuals were found in the largest Pinna and vice versa.
La respuesta puede cambiar según el tipo clínico de melanoma, siendo menor, según este estudio, en pacientes con melanoma lentiginoso acral y nodular, aunque por el bajo poder, esto no se puede concluir.to describe the initial experience in Colombia of locally advanced melanoma treated by isolated limb perfusion and compare the response rate of our melanoma subtypes with the literature.descriptive, retrospective study of a series of patients selected between 2007 and 2016. Qualitative variables were analyzed with proportions and frequencies, and quantitative variable with central tendency measures and measures of dispersion.11 patients were treated by isolated limb perfusion. After the treatment, seven patients (63.6%) had partial response, two patients (18.2%) had stable disease and two patients (18.2%) had disease progression. Five patients (45.5%) had mild complications.Isolated limb perfusion is still an important treatment strategy for locally advanced melanoma, with the goal of improving the patient quality of life. The response can change according to the type of melanoma, and could be smaller in patients with acral lentiginous and nodular melanoma, although we cannot make this conclusion with this type of study because it has low power and lack of a comparison group.

In support of World Ocean Day on June 8th 2024, we are pleased to be hosting Prof Carlos M. Duarte, Distinguished Professor of Marine Science. Prof Duarte's presentation "Rebuilding Marine Life" will be followed by a Q A session chaired by Editors Éva Lörinczi and Greta Hedley-Miller, with the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. Abstract: Hunting, overfishing, habitat loss and pollution have led to a loss of about half of the ocean´s natural capital. However, the ocean remains resilient and able to recover within one human generation, by 2050, if we simultaneously activate seven wedges for recovery. For the first time, the world leaders have agreed on a regenerative approach to ocean conservation, but the investments required to rebuild marine life far exceed those available todate. A new regenerative blue economy, which generates wealth while investing in healthy oceans is required to achieve the goal of a healthy ocean, particularly as the time window to achieve this goal is narrow and rapidly closing.

Delile in the Costa Brava littoral (NW Mediterranean) in 5 meadows was investigated by means of repeated nutrient additions along a year cycle. Nutrient additions had a modest effect on leaf growth. The response to fertilization varied considerably among meadows, with those meadows consistently maintaining low (300 µM dissolved inorganic nitrogen and 9 µM soluble reactive phosphorus) dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations in sediment pore waters showing the greatest response to fertilization. The seasonality of the growth response to fertilization was consistent with calculated nutrient deficiencies, which were greatest in late spring and summer. Nutrient deficiency was alleviated in the fall, partially due to reduced growth, but also to nutrient reclamation from old leaves, which represented 20% and 18% of the annual nitrogen and phosphorus incorporation, respectively. The relative deficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus differed among sites, with the highest response found in P-deficient meadows. Nutrient limitation of P. oceanica meadows was greatest in late spring and summer, but differed greatly in magnitude and nature (nitrogen vs phosphorus) depending on local nutrient regimes.
