Gas Sensors

This book focuses on the applications of nanomaterials in the fabrication of gas sensors. It covers recent developments of different materials used to design gas sensors, such as conducting polymers, semiconductors, as well as layered and nanosized materials. The widespread applications of various gas sensors for the detection of toxic gases are also discussed. The book provides a concise but thorough coverage of nanomaterials applications and utilization in gas sensors. Aggregation Behavior of Antipsychotic Drug under the Influence of Bile Salt in Aqueous/Urea Solution

The self-assembly of pharmaceutical amphiphiles is an important area of research because of the involvement of these amphiphiles in physiological processes. The mixed micellization behavior of antipsychotic drug (chlorpromazine hydrochloride, CPZ) in the presence of bile salt (sodium cholate, SC) was studied by surface tension and fluorescence techniques in aqueous/urea solution. The output of the study has been analyzed by using different models (Clint, Rubingh, and Motomura) for mixed amphiphilic systems. The attractive or synergistic interactions between these two amphiphiles in water/urea were confirmed by the obtained data. Various thermodynamic parameters for the mixed micellization process have been computed and discussed.

Green synthesis of zerovalent copper nanoparticles for efficient reduction of toxic azo dyes congo red and methyl orange

Abstract In this study, plant-mediated copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were synthesized. Due to its direct synthesis mechanism and eco-friendly nature, the current method accounts for the green chemistry approach using the fruit extract of Duranta erecta for the first time. The UV-visible spectrum of the CuNPs solution showed a distinct absorption peak at 588 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the fruit extract is responsible for the reduction as well as the stabilization of CuNPs. X-ray diffraction patterns conform the crystalline nature of CuNPs. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was performed for elemental analysis whereas field emission scanning electron microscopy was carried out for surface morphology. Prepared CuNPs were used for the reduction of carcinogenic azo dyes methyl orange (MO) and congo red (CR). CuNPs exhibit outstanding catalytic reduction for MO and CR in the presence of NaBH 4 as reducing agents with the pseudo-first-order rate constants of 8.6×10 −3 s −1 and 5.07×10 −3 s −1 for MO and CR, respectively. Thus, natural plant materials act as cheap and environmentally friendly support for the synthesis of CuNPs and could be used for the purification of water from organic dye effluents.

In the title mol-ecule, C(13)H(16)N(2)O(2)S, the nine non-H atoms comprising the indole residue are approximately coplanar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.031 Å). The partially saturated ring adopts a chair conformation. One amine H forms an inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond to a sulfonamide O atom, while the other amine H form is connected to the indole N atom of an adjacent mol-ecule via an N-H⋯N hydrogen bond, resulting in a three-dimensional architecture.

Tandem Deprotection–Dimerization–Macrocyclization Route to <i>C</i>₂ Symmetric <i>cyclo</i>‐Tetrapeptides

Dimerization-macrocyclization has been a long-standing problem in the cyclization of peptides since, together with the desired cyclic product, many cyclic oligomers and linear polymers may also be formed during the reaction. Therefore, the development of a process that affords the cyclic dimer predominantly is difficult. A novel and versatile strategy for the synthesis of symmetric cyclo-tetrapeptides by palladium-promoted tandem deprotection/cyclo-dimerization from readily available Cbz-dipeptidoyl benzotriazolides is reported (Cbz=carboxybenzyl).

Fabrication of Highly Sensitive Phenyl Hydrazine Chemical Sensor based on as-grown ZnO-Fe2O3 Microwires

As-grown ZnO-Fe2O3 microwires were prepared by a wet-chemical process using reducing agents in alkaline medium and characterized by UV/vis., FT-IR, Raman, electron-dispersive (EDS) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). They were deposited on a gold electrode (AuE, surface area, 0.0216 cm2) to fabricate a chemi-sensor with a fast response towards toxic phenyl hydrazine (PhHyd) chemical in phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The chemi-sensor was also exhibited higher sensitivity and long-term stability, 2 and enhanced electrochemical response towards toxic PhHyd. The calibration plot was linear (r2 = 0.9389) over the 1.0 nM to 10.0 mM PhHyd concentration ranges. The sensitivity and detection limit were calculated about 8.33 μAcm-2mM-1 and 0.67 ± 0.05 nM (signal-to-noise ratio, at a SNR of 3) respectively. Here the possible future prospective uses of the ZnO-Fe2O3 microwires in terms of chemical sensing are discussed.

Facile access to amino-substituted cyclopentafullerenes: novel reaction of [60]fullerene with β-substituted propionaldehydes and secondary amines in the absence/presence of magnesium perchlorate

A series of scarce amino-substituted cyclopentafullerenes instead of the expected N-alkyl-2,5-disubstituted fulleropyrrolidines were synthesized in moderate to excellent yields via the simple one-step reaction of [60]fullerene with cheap and easily available β-substituted propionaldehydes and secondary amines in the absence/presence of magnesium perchlorate. The in situ generation of allylic amines from β-substituted propionaldehydes and secondary amines played a crucial role in the successful preparation of amino-substituted cyclopentafullerenes without additional carbons. With the addition of magnesium perchlorate, secondary amines containing ethyl group(s) could produce novel amino-substituted cyclopentafullerenes with two additional carbons. All the obtained cyclopentafullerenes displayed high stereoselectivity with cis isomers as the exclusive or major products. Plausible reaction mechanisms are proposed to elucidate the above-mentioned reaction process.
