Adsorption of hydrogen at 300 K has been investigated on well-characterized samples of carbon nanotubes, besides carbon fibres by taking care to avoid many of the pitfalls generally encountered in such measurements. The nanotube samples include single- and multi-walled nanotubes prepared by different methods, as well as aligned bundles of multi-walled nanotubes. The effect of acid treatment of the nanotubes has been examined. A maximum adsorption of ca. 3.7 wt% is found with aligned multi-walled nanotubes. Electrochemical hydrogen storage measurements have also been carried out on the nanotube samples and the results are similar to those found by gas adsorption measurements.

A novel compound of the formula Ag2·CA (CA = cyanuric acid) possessing Ag sheets and hydrogen-bonded CA chains, exhibits anisotropic conductivity and acts as an infinite parallel plate capacitor with a high dielectric constant.

Ultrathin films of CuS and CuO have been obtained at the liquid−liquid interface by the reaction of copper cupferronate solution in toluene with Na2S or NaOH in aqueous solution. The films are generally single crystalline and around 40 nm thick. The thickness and crystallinity of the films are determined by the reactant concentrations and reaction conditions. The films have been characterized by electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy besides X-ray diffraction. Sonication of the films produces nanocrystals and nanorods which are also single crystalline.

The literature on inorganic open-framework materials abounds in the synthesis and characterization of metal silicates, phosphates and carboxylates. Most of these materials have an organic amine as the template. In the last few years, it has been shown that anions such as sulfate, selenite and selenate can also be employed to obtain organically templated open-framework materials. This tutorial review provides an up-to-date survey of organically templated metal sulfates, selenites and selenates, prepared under hydrothermal conditions. The discussion includes one-, two-, and three-dimensional structures of these materials, many of which possess open architectures. The article should be useful to practitioners of inorganic and materials chemistry, besides students and teachers. The article serves to demonstrate how most oxy-anions can be used to build complex structures with metal-oxygen polyhedra.
A detailed 13C-n.m.r. investigation has been carried out on the conformational changes in proline oligomers brought about by interaction with lithium and calcium perchlorates. Interaction of lithium and calcium salts with Piv-(Pro)n-OMe, n = 2, 4 and 5 results in trans-cis isomerization. In the case of pentaproline, metal salts also give rise to other trans-isomers caused by the rotation about the C α C(O) bond (Ψ, cis). Calcium salts seem to stabilize cis'-isomers and produce effects somewhat different from those of lithium salts.
