In the recent past economists have placed much emphasis on the role of technological change in the developed economies. Witness the many publications in the field of innovation, long waves and economic dynamics. Especially the present world-wide economic recession...
It is customary for a concluding chapter to summarise the findings presented in the preceding part of the book. In this case it is a somewhat daunting task. The three metropolitan region studies that make up the heart of this volume have covered an enormous amount of...
The CFT30 is a continuously variable automatic transmission with a chain driven variator. It will be used in the Ford 500, the Ford Freestyle and the Mercury Montego that go on sale in 2004. The CFT30 is the first CVT that uses a chain drive in a front-transverse installation combined with a torque converter for better launch performance. The transmission is capable of handling the 310 Nm engine torque of modern 6-cylinder engines. It employs fully electronic controls and achieves better performance and fuel economy results than today's 4-speed automatic transmissions and even newly developed 6-speeds in the same vehicle. Perfect shift-feel is increasing the driving comfort. The paper describes transmission system, design and main components. The contribution of the CFT30 specific design solutions to fuel economy, performance and comfort are explained. Most important test results of component and vehicle testing are shown.

Differences in measurement results of bone densitometry are an obvious disadvantage of this method. The differences are mainly due to the calibration proce
Two alternative methodological approaches (the IPFP based and the intramax procedures) to the problem of pattern identification in spatial interaction data are compared and evaluated in this paper. After a general discussion of the major characteristics and shortcomings of these methodologies, the paper presents the findings of a case study relying on telecommunication data measured by the Austrian PTT in 1991, in terms of erlangs. The results clearly illustrate the superiority of the intramax approach in the context of medium-sized and relatively centralised flow systems.

The objective of this study is to explore the determinants of inter-organizational knowledge generation within European networks of R&D collaboration. It is argued that social capital is a key determinant for successful knowledge generation. Thus, factors that...

The general setting of this paper is the metropolitan housing market of Vienna where in contrast to freemarket societies different kinds of support and control mechanism affect the market operation. For example, rents are partly controlled and new housing production, housing maintenance and modernisation are to a great extent subsidised by the federal government and the provincial governments of Vienna and Lower Austria. In this paper, a housing market simulation model is presented which attempts to lake into account the regulated and institutionalised nature of the metropolitan housing market of Vienna. Particular emphasis is placed on the demand side.

This paper explores the relationship between household income inequality and macro-economic uncertainty in the United States. Using a novel large-scale macroeconometric model, we shed light on regional disparities of inequality responses to a national uncertainty shock. The results suggest that income inequality decreases in most states, with a pronounced degree of heterogeneity in terms of the dynamic responses. By contrast, some few states, mostly located in the Midwest, display increasing levels of income inequality over time. Forecast error variance and historical decompositions highlight the importance of uncertainty shocks in explaining income inequality in most regions considered. Finally, we explain differences in the responses of income inequality by means of a simple regression analysis. These regressions reveal that the income composition as well as labor market fundamentals determine the directional pattern of the dynamic responses.
