Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) and nanowire heterostructures are unique form of nanosilicon, which are grown by direct synthesis (bottom-up) rather than conventional lithography patterning (top-down) approach. Here we review key advances in SiNWs and SiNW heterostructures enabled by the bottom-up approach to nanoscience. First, we introduce a general method for the synthesis of SiNWs with precisely controlled physical dimensions and electronic properties, which is based on metal nanocluster catalysed vapour–liquid–solid growth. Second, we discuss fundamental low-temperature electrical transport studies that define key differences between our bottom-up SiNWs and top-down silicon nanostructures. Third, we describe the use of SiNWs as fundamental building blocks for a wide range of nanoscale electronic devices and circuits. Fourth, we describe rational strategies for large-scale hierarchical assembly of SiNWs and applications of unique assembly characteristics for macroelectronics. Fifth, we examine the potential of SiNWs as active elements in ultra-sensitive nanoscale sensors for chemical and biological detection. Last, we discuss SiNW heterostructures, which open up new and often unique dimensions of complexity and functionality.
Abstract This study describes patterns of sex differentials in perinatal mortality in China and Finland. The analysis is based on three population‐based one‐year birth cohorts, one from Qingdao, China, in 1992 and two from Northern Finland in 1966 and 1985–86, comprised of 9,219, 11,422 and 9,207 singletons with at least 28 gestational weeks and 1000 g in birthweight, respectively. Both Finnish cohorts had an excess of male over female perinatal deaths, but in the Chinese cohort girls were more likely to die than boys. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of perinatal mortality for boys was 1.31 (95 per cent confidence interval [CI] 0.98,1.78) and 1.57 (95 per cent CI 0.89, 2.78) in the Finnish 1966 and 1985–86 cohorts, respectively, and 0.82 (95 per cent CI 0.55,1.20) in the Chinese cohort. The corresponding figure for stillbirths in the Chinese was 0.57 (95 per cent CI 0.33, 0.98), which could explain the total excess of female deaths during the perinatal period. Our results suggest that the role of different social and cultural environments on the existing sex differentials in perinatal mortality between the countries needs further evaluation.
Abstract This chapter discusses the predictors and consequences of childhood obesity. Topics covered include predictors of obesity, diet and weight gain, and eating patterns. The physical, social, and psychosocial consequences of obesity are also considered.
It is estimated that at least 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the US population, currently have diabetes (1), a disease characterized by impaired insulin action and/or production. Although type 2 diabetes (T2D),4 which accounts for >90% of diagnosed diabetes, is largely predictable through anthropometric, lifestyle, and clinical factors, and is preventable through diet and lifestyle modifications, the metabolic pathways underlying its development and progression are incompletely understood. The rapidly developing area of metabolomics, which is designed to quantitatively profile a large number of small molecules in cells or biofluids, has emerged as a promising approach to elucidate altered metabolic pathways and discover novel biomarkers in T2D. The past several years have seen the initial success of metabolomics in identifying novel biomarkers for insulin resistance and T2D. In 2009, Newgard et al. (2) compared 131 targeted metabolites between 74 obese and 67 lean subjects and found that plasma concentrations of branched-chained amino acids (BCAAs) were strongly correlated with obesity and insulin resistance. In 2011, Wang et al. (3) measured a panel of 61 metabolites and found that 5 BCAAs and aromatic amino acids (i.e., isoleucine, leucine, valine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine) were predictive of developing diabetes in the Framingham Offspring Study and the Malmo Diet and Cancer Study. In 2012, Wang-Sattler et al. (4) quantified 140 metabolites in 4297 fasting serum samples in the Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg cohort and found that the concentrations of metabolites [i.e., lower values of glycine and lysophosphatidylcholine (18:2), as well as higher values of acetylcarnitine] predicted impaired glucose tolerance 7 years before disease onset. Meanwhile, Cheng et al. (5) observed significant associations of insulin resistance traits with metabolites glutamine and glutamate and the glutamine-to-glutamate ratio, from a panel of 45 metabolites in the Framingham Heart Study. Finally, Wang et al. …
The hormonal profiles of nested female patients (n = 500) with self-reported symptoms typical of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), oligomenorrhea, and/or hirsutism and their randomly selected controls (n = 1026) at the age of 31 yr were analyzed in a general population-based Northern Finland birth cohort 1966 to find out whether the symptomatic women also have the endocrine characteristics of PCOS and could be detected in a general population using simple questions. Higher medians of serum testosterone (T) (2.10 vs. 1.90 nmol/liter, P < 0.001), LH (5.40 vs. 4.85 U/liter, P = 0.005), insulin (53.8 vs. 51.66 pmol/liter, P = 0.040), and free androgen index (FAI) (4.01 vs. 3.03, P < 0.001) and lower glucose/insulin ratio (91.1 × 108vs. 94.9 × 108, P = 0.048) and SHBG (52.4 vs. 60.7 nmol/liter, P < 0.001) were observed among the cases, but no difference was observed in cortisol and glucose levels between the cases and controls. Of all the women in the cohort, 10.2% reported only oligomenorrhea and had biochemical findings similar to the whole case group. Those who reported only hirsutism (10.4%) were in between the case and control groups according to biochemical findings. The subjects who reported both oligomenorrhea and hirsutism (3.4%) had the highest T, LH, FAI, insulin, and glucose and the lowest SHBG and glucose/insulin ratio, compared with the case group and the groups with either symptom only indicating a dose-response manner in typical endocrine profile of PCOS by adding up symptoms. The levels of T and FAI were higher and SHBG lower in groups with overweight or obesity both at 14 and 31 yr, compared with groups with normal weight at 14 yr and overweight or obesity at 31 yr. In the group with normal weight at 14 and 31 yr and the group with overweight or obesity at 14 yr but normal weight at 31 yr, the levels of T and FAI were lowest and SHBG highest. T and FAI were higher and SHBG lower among the cases than the controls in groups stratified by weight development from adolescence to adulthood. In conclusion, this longitudinal study of a large, stable population indicates that women with self-reported symptoms of hirsutism and/or oligomenorrhea show endocrine characteristics of PCOS and can be detected in a general population using simple questions. These symptoms are markers of the underlying metabolic alterations possibly associated with increased health risks in later life.
The effect of small imperfections on the buckling of continuous structures loaded into the plastic range is studied. A simple model study is presented and several additional examples are discussed. The rôle of the load at which elastic unloading first occurs is emphasized, and a general asymptotic analysis is given for the behavior prior to the onset of elastic unloading for a class of elastic-plastic solids subject to loads characterized by a single load parameter. Asymptotic imperfection-sensitivity formulae are obtained whose features are similar to analogous formulae for elastic structures.
