OBJECTIVE—To explore the relationship between depressive symptoms and incidence of type 2 diabetes in women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—We conducted an analysis of 72,178 female nurses aged 45–72 years who did not have diagnosed diabetes and who answered the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Status Survey (SF-36) at baseline in 1992. We calculated relative risks (RR) of type 2 diabetes for women with presence of depressive symptoms (i.e., Five-Item Mental Health Index [MHI-5] score >52). RESULTS—During 4 years of follow-up (282,317 person-years), 973 incident cases of type 2 diabetes were documented. Age-adjusted RR of developing type 2 diabetes for women with presence of depressive symptoms was 1.55 (95% CI 1.27–1.90). Additional adjustment for BMI resulted in a RR of developing type 2 diabetes of 1.36 (1.11–1.67). The multivariate RR of developing type 2 diabetes was 1.22 (1.00–1.50). After excluding women diagnosed with diabetes between 1992 and 1994, 472 incident cases of type 2 diabetes were documented for the follow-up period from 1994 to 1996 (148,889 person-years). The multivariate RR of developing type 2 diabetes for women with depressive symptoms was 1.29 (0.96–1.72). CONCLUSIONS—Our data suggest that depressive symptoms are associated with a modest increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Abstract This chapter describes population obesity trends from descriptive epidemiologic studies. Topics covered include obesity trends in U.S. adults, obesity trends in U.S. children, and international obesity trends. There is clear evidence that obesity has reached epidemic proportions in many parts of the world and is increasing rapidly in developing countries. In many populations, the entire distribution of BMI values has shifted to the right, indicating a dramatic increase in morbid obesity.
We followed 11,355 children born in 1966 up to the age of 24 years to investigate the impact of birthweight on long-term outcomes of death and development. As expected, low-birthweight (LBW, 1500-2,499 gm) children showed a higher risk of death than normal-birthweight (NBW, > or =2,500 gm) children before the age of 15 years. Rate ratios for LBW children ranged from 25 for the first week of life to 2.5 for ages 5-14 years. Rate ratios of very-low-birthweight (VLBW, <1,500 gm) children for the first year of life were 10 times higher than those of LBW children. Similarly, for the first 14 years of life, surviving LBW children experienced a higher risk of being hospitalized as well as staying in hospitals for over 2 weeks if they were hospitalized. The LBW children still had a higher risk of receiving sick pensions at the age of 24 years.
that a geometrically similar near-tip crack profile is maintained during growth. The resulting predictions for the variation of J with crack growth are found to fit well to the experimental results obtained on deeply cracked compact specimens.

The surface structures of the stage-1 ternary graphite intercalation compounds K${\mathit{M}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ (${\mathit{M}}_{\mathit{x}}$=Hg,${\mathrm{H}}_{0.8}$) have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Constant-current and constant-height images of both materials exhibit superstructures in addition to the graphite atomic lattice. In the case of ${\mathrm{KHgC}}_{4}$, a commensurate 2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2 and an incommensurate superstructure with a period of 8.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 \AA{} have been observed. Images of ${\mathrm{KH}}_{0.8}$${\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ exhibit a one-dimensional superstructure with a 12.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 \AA{} period and a two-dimensional superlattice with a 14.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5 \AA{} period. The 2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2 structure in ${\mathrm{KHgC}}_{4}$ has been attributed to a modulation of the surface density of states by the periodic potential of the underlying intercalant. Possible explantions for these long-period superstructures observed in ${\mathrm{KHgC}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{KH}}_{0.8}$${\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ will be discussed.
