This chapter describes a negotiation-driven method that can be used to formulate and design component and service-oriented systems. Component and service-oriented development are increasingly being promoted in literature as rapid low-cost strategies for implementing adaptable and extensible software systems. In reality, these development strategies carry significant risk throughout the system life cycle. The risks are related to the difficulty in mapping requirements to component and service-based architectures, the black-box software used to compose the systems, and the difficulty in managing and evolving the resulting systems. These problems underscore the need for software engineering methods that can balance aspects of requirements with business concerns and the architectural assumptions and capabilities embodied in software components and services.Request access from your librarian to read this chapter's full text.
Higher plasma bicarbonate levels were associated with lower odds of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus among women in the Nurses' Health Study. Further studies are needed to confirm this finding in different populations and to elucidate the mechanism for this relation.
Buckling analyses of several reticulated shell structures are carried out using both an approximate equivalent shell analysis and a discrete analysis which is essentially exact. The structures considered are: an infinite reticulated beam under axial compression and resting at equally spaced intervals on elastic springs; a shallow section of a reticulated sphere with an equilateral triangle grid subject to normal loading; and an infinite reticulated cylindrical shell with an equilateral triangle grid subject to axial compression. The discrete analysis is used to evaluate the accuracy of the predictions of the equivalent shell analysis. The buckling load computed on the basis of the equivalent shell analysis is nonconservative when a characteristic wavelength of the buckling deformation is on the order of the member length or the axial load in a member at buckling is on the order of the Euler buckling load of a simply supported column. The effect on the buckling load of reducing the rigidity of the joints is investigated for both the beam-spring model and the reticulated spherical shell. Finally, the importance of the discrete analysis is illustrated by the determination of the optimum properties of a shallow section of a reticulated sphere subject to a prescribed normal loading and designed against buckling.
Context Current public health campaigns to reduce obesity and type 2 diabetes have largely focused on increasing exercise, but have paid little attention to the reduction of sedentary behaviors. Objective To examine the relationship between various sedentary behaviors, especially prolonged television (TV) watching, and risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in women. Design, Setting, and Participants Prospective cohort study conducted from 1992 to 1998 among women from 11 states in the Nurses' Health Study. The obesity analysis included 50 277 women who had a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30 and were free from diagnosed cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or cancer and completed questions on physical activity and sedentary behaviors at baseline. The diabetes analysis included 68 497 women who at baseline were free from diagnosed diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, or cancer. Main Outcome Measures Onset of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results During 6 years of follow-up, 3757 (7.5%) of 50 277 women who had a BMI of less than 30 in 1992 became obese (BMI ≥30). Overall, we documented 1515 new cases of type 2 diabetes. Time spent watching TV was positively associated with risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. In the multivariate analyses adjusting for age, smoking, exercise levels, dietary factors, and other covariates, each 2-h/d increment in TV watching was associated with a 23% (95% confidence interval [CI], 17%-30%) increase in obesity and a 14% (95% CI, 5%-23%) increase in risk of diabetes; each 2-h/d increment in sitting at work was associated with a 5% (95% CI, 0%-10%) increase in obesity and a 7% (95% CI, 0%-16%) increase in diabetes. In contrast, standing or walking around at home (2 h/d) was associated with a 9% (95% CI, 6%-12%) reduction in obesity and a 12% (95% CI, 7%-16%) reduction in diabetes. Each 1 hour per day of brisk walking was associated with a 24% (95% CI, 19%-29%) reduction in obesity and a 34% (95% CI, 27%-41%) reduction in diabetes. We estimated that in our cohort, 30% (95% CI, 24%-36%) of new cases of obesity and 43% (95% CI, 32%-52%) of new cases of diabetes could be prevented by adopting a relatively active lifestyle (<10 h/wk of TV watching and ≥30 min/d of brisk walking). Conclusions Independent of exercise levels, sedentary behaviors, especially TV watching, were associated with significantly elevated risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, whereas even light to moderate activity was associated with substantially lower risk. This study emphasizes the importance of reducing prolonged TV watching and other sedentary behaviors for preventing obesity and diabetes.
Abstract Background: A history of diabetes mellitus and a diet high in glycemic load are both potential risk factors for pancreatic cancer. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are a prevalent source of readily absorbable sugars and have been associated with an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. We investigated whether higher consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks increases the risk of pancreatic cancer. Methods: We examined the relation between consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks and the development of pancreatic cancer in the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Among 88,794 women and 49,364 men without cancer at baseline, we documented 379 cases of pancreatic cancer during up to 20 years of follow-up. Soft drink consumption was first assessed at baseline (1980 for the women, 1986 for the men) and updated periodically thereafter. Results: Compared with participants who largely abstained from sugar-sweetened soft drinks, those who consumed more than three sugar-sweetened soft drinks weekly experienced overall a multivariate relative risk (RR) of pancreatic cancer of 1.13 [95% confidence interval (95% CI), 0.81-1.58; P for trend = 0.47]. Women in the highest category of sugar-sweetened soft drink intake did experience a significant increase in risk (RR, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.02-2.41; P for trend = 0.05), whereas there was no association between sweetened soft drink intake and pancreatic cancer among men. Among women, the risk associated with higher sugar-sweetened soft drink was limited to those with elevated body mass index (>25 kg/m2; RR, 1.89; 95% CI, 0.96-3.72) or with low physical activity (RR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.06-3.85). In contrast, consumption of diet soft drinks was not associated with an elevated pancreatic cancer risk in either cohort. Conclusion: Although soft drink consumption did not influence pancreatic cancer risk among men, consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks may be associated with a modest but significant increase in risk among women who have an underlying degree of insulin resistance.
Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to elucidate details of the nearly commensurate charge density wave (CDW) phase in 1T-TaS2. Large-area images show that the nearly commensurate phase has a hexagonal domain structure, and that the domain period exhibits a strong temperature dependence. Real-space and two-dimensional Fourier transform analyses of atomic resolution images further demonstrate that within the domains the CDW is approximately commensurate with the atomic lattice, and that between domains the CDW amplitude decreases and the CDW phase changes. In addition, disorder observed in the hexagonal domain structure at low temperatures is suggested to be due to domain wall pinning.
