BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to study the clinical significance of joint detection of mALB and NAG in early kidney damage in burn patients. METHODS Forty-five burn patients of different degrees were selected and divided into mild, moderate, severe, and heavy burns, and normal healthy controls according to their severity. Their b2- macroglobulin (b2-MG), a1-macroglobulin (a1-MG), mALB and N-acetyl-b-D-NAG were tested for 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks after the burn, respectively. RESULTS The urine concentration change b2-MG, a1-MG, MALB, and NAG are related to the area, depth and degree of the burn. The more serious the burn is, the higher the levels of mALB and NAG (P<0.001 or P<0.01) is. CONCLUSIONS Early detection of mALB and NAG is helpful for early kidney damage diagnosis in burn patients to prevent further complications.

The parasite only appeared and caused disease in juvenile catfish at a water temperature of 18 to 23°C. Marked external macroscopical clinical signs of the disease were sluggish movement of the fish, and the appearance of white filiform dermal cysts varying in size (3–20 mm in length and 0.15–0.35 mm in width). Examination of both fixed and fresh mounts for light microscopy and of samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed spherical spores (3.2–15 µm in diameter) with a peripheral nucleus (1.1–1.8 × 0.5–1.6 µm in diameter) and a prominent refractile body (2.08–10.83 µm in diameter) which occupied most of the volume of a mature spore. Three types of spore were identified, and are presumed to represent various developmental stages. Meanwhile, TEM showed the remnant nuclei in the residual plasmodium of a cyst, revealing its degenerative process. This paper represents the first observation and description of Dermocystidium sp. parasitizing catfishes. The novel SnO diskettes have been synthesized by evaporating either SnO or SnO(2) powders at elevated temperature. Disregard the source material being SnO or SnO(2), the SnO diskettes are formed at a low-temperature region of 200-400 degrees C. Two types of diskette shapes have been identified: the solid-wheel shape with a drop center rim (type I) and the diskette with cone peak(s) and spiral steps (type II). The diskettes are determined to be tetragonal SnO structure (P4/nmm), with their flat surfaces being (001). The formation of the SnO diskettes is suggested to result from a solidification process. The structural evolution from SnO diskettes to SnO(2) diskettes has been investigated by oxidizing at different temperatures. The result shows that the phase transformation from SnO to SnO(2) occurs in two processes of decomposition and oxidization, and the decomposition process consists of two steps: first from SnO to Sn(3)O(4) and then from Sn(3)O(4) to SnO(2).
