Shape-controlled octahedral gold nanoparticles act as oxygen evolution catalyst by transferring photogenerated high energy holes to the oxygen evolution level, as described by H. W. Jang and co-workers in article 1600340. Octahedral gold nanoparticles on widebandgap of the semiconductors improve the water-splitting photoactivities for over-bandgap photon energies.
