The study was held on the sample plots at the territory of Dzherga State Nature Preserve, North of the Republic of Buryatia. Five years after the intensive fire the structure and floristic composition of the forest coenosis have been deeply modified. Significant aboveground dieback and widespread destruction of the shrub and the moss/lichen covers, increased growth of phytomass of the grasses, and post-fire regeneration of aspen and other species were observed. All these reasons provoke the alterations in belowground compartment of the ecosystem. Despite the better thermal regime of the soil on the 5 years old fire site, the mass of the live thin roots in the top 20 cm of soil was 1.6 times less compared to the control undisturbed stand. The structure and the distribution of the live thin roots pool in the upper soil have also changed since the fire. The thin tree roots mass decreases by 40%, while for shrubs it 2.5 times less, however the thin root mass doubles for the grasses. Plant detritus distribution in the top soil of the control stand follows the stable and labile soil organic matter pool. After a fire the total soil organic matter decreases within the top 20 cm of soil, however the spatial pattern of the stable soil organic matter shows no changes.
