This paper presents an analysis of the response of an irreversible charge transfer reaction at a solid/electrolyte interface to a damped oscillatory controlled potential perturbation such as may be imposed by a typical potentiostat. Both the charging current and the faradaic current are examined, and it is shown that the latter always overshoots the current that would be produced by an ideal potentiostat. The current overshoot is exaggerated if the potential overshoots, and increases somewhat for larger changes in potential. Only after several dimensionless times, (where is the exponential decay constant), does the excess faradaic current remain close to zero.
