A review and discussion on the rational synthesis of zeolites based on the mechanism of formation has been carried out. It is shown that by combining experimental and theoretical work, it is possible to understand and, in some cases, predict the conditions for growing a particular zeolite when several structures compete. Directions for synthesizing extralarge pore zeolites and other zeolitic materials are discussed.
