Abstract
1 min read2,2′:6′,2″-Terpyridine metal complexes functionalized with bromomethyl groups in 5,5″- and 4′-position were used as supramolecular initiators for the living polymerization of 2-oxazoline monomers. Polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained and the molecular weight could be predetermined by the monomer to initiator ratio. Defined functional endgroups could be introduced via termination of the living chains. The central metal ions such as iron(II) or cobalt(II) could be removed under basic conditions resulting in uncomplexed polymers with free terpyridine segments. After addition of a metal salt almost complete recomplexation to the supramolecular systems occurs. The polymers were characterized using GPC, UV/VIS spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF-MS and NMR.
