Abstract

Palladium icosahedral nanocrystals , a type of multiply-twinned nanocrystals, are found to enable facile and fast hydrogen absorption. In their Research Article (e202306906), Manos Mavrikakis, Younan Xia et al. demonstrate that, upon absorbing hydrogen, the H-saturated twin boundaries can divide the particle into 20 smaller single-crystal units in which the formation of high-energy phase boundaries is no longer favored. Meanwhile, the presence of tensile strain accelerates the kinetics of hydrogen absorption due to the increase in lattice spacing. Notably, the as-obtained PdHx nanocrystals with controllable compositions also show remarkable thermal and catalytic stability toward formic acid oxidation, which can also be attributed to the tensile strain.
