SUMMARY We have previously reported increased testosterone and androstenedione concentrations and decreased sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations in the plasma of massively obese women. We now report that these plasma hormone concentrations return to normal in twelve of the same women after substantial weight reduction and these changes are associated with more normal menstrual cycles. We conclude that body weight and fat are important determinants of sex steroid secretion and binding and thus influence menstrual function.
