The effect of the relative rRNA concentrations on the error frequency and some related quantities in protein synthesis is discussed, and explicit relations are derived for two simple limiting cases. It is shown that the experimentally observed linear correlation between mRNA codon frequencies and tRNA levels is only “second best” from the point of view of error reduction.
