Copolymers of C60 and phenylacetylene (PA) were synthesized by copolymerization reactions catalyzed by MoCl5Ph4Sn, WCl6Ph4Sn, [Rh(nbd)]Cl]2, and [Rh(cod)Cl]2 (where nbd = 2,5-norbornadiene, cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). Stirring a toluene so-lution of C60, phenylacetylene, and the catalyst under nitrogen at room temperature for 24 hours produced poly(C60-co-phe-nylacetylene)s in good yields. Varying the C60 feed ratio changed the C60 content of the copolymers from 0.58 to 13.7 wt%. All the copolymers are soluble in common solvents such as THF and chloroform, and the structures of the copolymers were characterized by spectroscopic methods. The C60-phenylacetylene copolymers effectively limited strong 532-nm laser pulses.
