A suspension of NaCN in CH 3 CN was treated with excess of C 2 F 4 . The resulting red solution was evaporated to dryness and a red amorphous solid remained. One part of this solid was dissolved in water and a solution of Ph 4 AsCl was added. During the work-up procedure two salts were isolated, yellow [Ph 4 As + ][CF 3 C(O)C(CN) 2 - ] 1a and red [Ph 4 As + ][(NC) 2 CC(CN)C(F)NC(CN) 2 - ] 2a. The products were characterized on the basis of field desorption mass spectroscopy for positive and negative ions, 1a was further characterized by an X-ray single crystal investigation.
