Abstract This research investigated the effects of using an aluminum (sec-butoxide)3/ethyl acetoacetate (Al-SB/EAc) mixed sol for the pre-treatment of nylon-dyed fabrics. The fabrics were subsequently processed with fluoride and nano zinc oxide, using the padding, predrying, and curing method. The results showed that the water- and oil-repelling angles of contact of the treated fabrics were increased as the Al-SB concentration was decreased or the EAc concentration was increased. The optimal water and oil repellence by the treated fabrics was achieved at the curing temperature of 170°C. Moreover, further treatment with fluoride led to good anti-ultraviolet and anti-bacterial functions. After washing 20 times with sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) solution, the treated fabrics showed a reduction of approximately 1–2% in the abovementioned properties and their colour faded by 15–23%.
