This special issue showcases some of the ongoing research at the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems (BINN). The fields of research can be summarized using a "science tree". The main trunk is based on functional materials and fundamental physics effects. The major fields of research are self-powered systems, nanogenerators, blue energy, tribotronics, piezotronics, and piezo-phototronics. The small branches represent the potential applications and future perspectives.
