Zerstörung von innen: Treten hohle, NaHCO3-haltige Poly(d,l-lactid-co-glycolid)(PLGA)-Mikrokügelchen in die endozytischen Organellen einer lebenden Zelle ein, reagiert das NaHCO3 im wässrigen Kern mit eindringenden Protonen zu CO2-Gas. Die Entwicklung von CO2-Bläschen führt zur Bildung kleiner Löcher in der PLGA-Schale und so zur schnellen Freisetzung des verkapselten Wirkstoffs Doxorubicin (DOX; siehe Bild).
