A number of reviews have been published detailing the chemical and physical properties of silkworm silks1–6 and the genetics of silk production in the silkworm7–9. Here we overview some of the key chemical and physical properties of both silkworm and spider silks, and then review the genetic aspects of silk production in these organisms.
