A simple calculation is presented in which the equation giving the current-voltage characteristic of a self-triggered channel ion source is derived. The source is made from a straight channel electron multiplier operated in the self-sustained cascade mode. An analysis is given on each of the following topics: secondary emission and amplification in the channel, current saturation, and ion feedback. Comparison with experimental measurements is also presented.
