Scientometric Portrait of Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman

The study presents an analysis of 766 publications; 94 books, 59 chapters in books, 598 research papers and 15 patents contributed by Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman in which 83 (10.83 %) are single-authored while 683 (89.17 %) co-authored published from 1966 to June 2007 in various domains as: Natural Products (90), Natural Products-syn (9), Natural Products-nmr (14) Natural Products-isol (423), Natural Products-x-ray (9), Synthesis (132), Medicinal Chemistry (24), Spectroscopy (27), Analytical Chemistry (8) and Miscellaneous (30). The study shows that with total 3214 collaborativeships as many as 547 authors collaborated with Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman of which M. I. Chaudhary (398) is the most prolific collaborator and the maximum number of co-authors at one time is twenty-one. The highest number of publications in a year is 67 contributed in 2005. Two-authored productivity is the highest by contributing 137 publications while in case of number of authorships (672) six-authored productivity is at the top. His productivity coefficient .69 is a clear indication of his higher productivity period just after 50 percentile age of his research career under consideration. He used 113 channels of communication {local 23 (20.35 %) and foreign 90 (79.64 %)} to disseminate the results of his research. Phytochemistry (93) is at the top of the list followed by Elsevier Science Publishers & Journal of Natural Products each (56). The number of publications published locally is 106 (13.84 %) and 660 (86.16 %) from abroad. Publication density and concentration is 6.72 and 7.89respectively while average number of publications per year is 18.24. The scattering of 766 publications over 113 channels of communication follow Bradford's Law. Among the most prolific keywords in titles are: Alkaloids, Synthesis, Isolation, Steroidal Alkaloid, Natural Products, Bioactive Natural Products, Stereoselective Synthesis, Medicinal Plants, Triterpenoid, Harmaline, 13C-NMR, Synthetic Studies, Chemical Constituents, Buxus papillosa, Rhazya stricta and Diterpenoid.
