Content transcoding is becoming a privileged strategy to tailor rich multimedia to be delivered to the wide range of mobile device and through different networks. However, computing the appropriate multimedia format for each of the possible condition could be very expensive and somehow unmanageable. Web services represent a distributive technology that could enhance content adaptation by adding modularity and portability. This paper presents a Web service-based distributed architecture that combines on-the-fly media transcoding with hierarchical caching strategies to provide the user with effective reliable and efficient rich media services.
