Brönsted and Lewis acid sites in Y zeolites have been determined by using a large base molecule, such as quinoline, and monitoring the adsorption/desorption experiments by infrared spectroscopy. It has been pointed out that quinoline does not penetrate deep inside the channels of the Y zeolite, and, consequently, this molecule can be used mainly to determine external acidity of zeolites and related materials with pore diameter lower than 0.7 nm.
