Abstract A recent analysis of genome‐wide expression patterns and regulatory motif content of paralogous yeast genes 1 strongly suggests that mutational robustness (backup) between paralogous genes is achieved via transcriptional reprogramming of one paralog to compensate for the loss or silencing of the other.
