Abstract
1 min readReports that a rising trend in childhood overweight (and obesity) exists in Egypt, with the prevalence higher than in most countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. The proportion of overweight children with stunting has also increased in the last few decades. Key determinants of overweight and obesity in children include urban living, maternal obesity, and a calorie-dense diet. High levels of overnutrition among women of reproductive age predominate, with more than 80 percent of such women overweight or obese. More than 10 percent of women show signs of both obesity and anemia. Based on data from the Egypt Demographic and Health Survey and the literature, maternal obesity remains a critical factor in the development of childhood obesity. Key determinants of overweight and obesity among women of reproductive age include sedentary lifestyles and consumption of energy-dense foods, with women from richer households and urban areas slightly more likely to prove overweight.
