While the advance of electronic technology allowed to scale down integrated circuit elements by orders of magnitude, their photonic counterparts remain limited in size and density of placement by diffraction of light. Here we detail how these limits can be shifted by utilizing novel van der Waals (vdW) materials thanks to their unprecedented refractive indices and giant anisotropy.
