Output-Only Versus Direct Input-Output Structural Condition Monitoring Methods

Structural condition monitoring techniques are generally divided into two primary groups: (1) output-only and (2) input-output methods. While the former solely requires data from the response of a structure monitored through an extended period, the latter methods are based on the data available from both structural responses to applied forces and the effects of Environmental and Operational Variations termed EOV. This extended abstract presents the authors’ recent achievements in developing algorithms in either of these categories. The signals used in both models are first treated using a signal decomposition algorithm termed variational mode decomposition. A threshold-setting strategy based on the concept of the R-chart is obtained from historical data in both cases, which is further used for anomaly detection. Critical properties of the proposed methods are described, and gaps for future research are explored.
