Core–shell fibers, fabricated by co-electrospinning, are presented by Antonio L. Medina-Castillo, Jorge F. Fernández-Sánchez, and co-worker on page 3488. The fiber shell is formed by a fluorescent pH-sensitive co-polymer while the core is formed by magnetic nanoparticles and an oxygen indicator dispersed in poly(methyl methacrylate). The core-shell fibers are magnetic, change their optical properties with the pH of the media, and they are sensitive to O2 – characteristics promising towards application in optical sensors.
