Three alternative methods of measuring metropolitan decentralization are compared with particular attention to their effectiveness in measuring the movement of blacks and whites in the United States. The author concludes that the relative decentralization index developed by R. Redick is conceptually superior to the other methods considered and that it does not create untoward computational difficulties. (ANNOTATION)
