Menyuk (Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1985, 31, 253-259) raises a number of argu ments in support of and against the proposal by Bialystok and Ryan (same issue of the Quarterly) to define metalinguistic skill in terms of two underlying cogni tive components. This response to Menyuk clarifies terms used by Bialystok and Ryan and more explicitly delineates the purpose that the proposed framework may serve in theory building.
