The synthesis of Fe/Mn complexes able to model enzymes possessing related cofactors are still a challenge. Herein, we discuss the stepwise synthesis and characterization of a Fe( ii )/Mn( ii ) species and related Fe( ii )/Fe( ii ) complexes.
