Introduction: Sociology in Portugal

This chapter begins with the presentation of the theoretical approach employed to study the history of sociology in Portugal from 1945 to the present day: genealogical pragmatism. This is followed by a discussion of the chief methodological challenges facing such an endeavour. The chapter concludes with a presentation of the five main analytic dimensions of Carreira da Silva’s approach: social agents; ideas; instruments; institutions; and contexts.
