Nanowires constitute an important class of one-dimensional nanomaterials. Nanowires of a variety of materials have been synthesized and characterized in the last few years. Chemical routes as well as use of templates have dominated the strategies employed for the synthesis of nanowires. Many of the properties of inorganic nanowires are found to have potential technological applications. In this chapter, we present an overview of the synthesis, properties, and applications of nanowires of metals, metal oxides, chalcogenides, nitrides, and other inorganic nanowires.
