Thermospray mass spectrometry was used for identification of the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) peaks of fluorescamine-derivatized m-xylylenediamine (m-XDA). Very low levels of m-XDA need to be determined because it is toxic and used as a hardener in epoxy resin paints intended for food containers. It has been proved that the more polar RP-HPLC peak corresponds to the monosubstituted fluorescamine derivative of m-XDA and the other to the disubstituted derivative.
