How hazy views become full pictures

Garcia-Penton, Fernandez Garcia, Costello, Dunabeitia, and Carreiras [The neuroanatomy of bilingualism: How to turn a hazy view into the full picture. Language, Cognition, and Neuroscience, doi: 10.1080/23273798.2015.1068944.] review studies that have compared structural imaging analyses of monolinguals and bilinguals to determine if there is a systematic effect of bilingualism on brain structure. Although the majority of the studies reviewed show such effects, the authors are concerned about inconsistencies in the data and decide that the results at this time are still “hazy” and that clear conclusions are premature. The commentary points to several problems in their argument that lead to their unnecessarily pessimistic interpretation and concludes with a decidedly more optimistic view of the state of this field.
