Holes and hole-pairing in the oxygen band of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors

Evidence for the presence of holes on oxygen in the cuprate superconductors is critically examined. While there is little doubt that the O 2p holes are responsible for superconductivity, the available experimental evidence for the pairing of these holes does not appear to be altogether sufficient.
