Extreme Weather and Production Economics: Insights, Challenges, and Future Directions

Extreme weather is a grand challenge affecting production and operations. In this editorial for the special issue on "extreme weather and production economics", we first review the topic briefly by examining and linking existing studies in the literature. Then, we introduce the special issue publications. These publications not only provide insights into various aspects of this topic but also set the foundation for important future study directions. Examples of potential future directions include more effectively modeling risk and uncertainty through stochastic models, understanding the various nuances of this grand challenge problem through multimethodological perspectives, and addressing concerns through disruptive technology innovations. Finally, we conclude this editorial by further commentary on the persistence and response of future extreme weather events in organizational and interorganizational production and operations.
